About This Site
This site is to support the Conference which took place on 27th April 2004 at the RIBA. The conference was the culmination of the Entrepreneurship and Public Policy Project conducted by the Diebold Institute.
Introduction
The purpose of the conference was to review the steps that have been taken over the past 10-15 years to improve the entrepreneurial climate in the UK, to discuss how far those steps have affected the performance of UK-based firms in high-technology sectors (principally information technology and biotechnology), and to consider what further action the government could take to stimulate entrepreneurial activity. The role of the financial system in supporting start-up and early-stage firms were also examined. On all these issues comparisons were made with the US and other European countries. The aim was to distil lessons from British and international experience which will influence the development of entrepreneurship policy in the UK.
The conference formed part of a programme of research into entrepreneurship and public policy which had been carried out over the preceeding three years by the Diebold Institute for Public Policy Studies. A paper on entrepreneurship and public policy in the UK, drawing on the discussions at the April 27 event and on the research papers commissioned by the Diebold Institute, is published on this site.
